Taiwan: GHG Emission

SBT carbon reduction path(scopes 1+2 emission intensity)

Asia Cement passed the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) review in 2021, setting 2019 as the base year. The company committed to an 8% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity of cementitious materials by 2025 across its Taiwan cement operations. This milestone positioned Asia Cement as the fourth cement company globally to set validated SBTs aligned with the well-below 2°C climate scenario. Asia Cement remains the only cement company in Taiwan to consistently achieve its SBTi targets each year, and in 2024, it met its 2025 Phase 1 carbon reduction goal ahead of schedule.

Building upon this achievement, the company further referenced the SBTi Net-Zero Standard in 2024, adopting a 1.5°C pathway with 2021 as the new base year, and set a near-term target of 22.9% reduction in emissions intensity by 2030. Additionally, Asia Cement voluntarily committed to a 43.5% reduction in emissions intensity by 2035, and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To meet this net-zero goal, the company will prioritize at least 90% absolute emissions reductions, with high-quality carbon offsets limited to no more than 10% for residual emissions.

Net Zero Strategy and Target Roadmap

ACC, referring the documents of the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) and the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), has set its net-zero strategy and target roadmap based on its ambitious carbon reduction targets. In response to the emission characteristics of the cement industry, ACC has formulated carbon reduction strategies at different periods. In the initial stage, the focus is on adopting the best available technologies, such as promoting the circular economy to reduce clinker emission factors, producing low-carbon cement to decrease the clinker ratio in cement, reducing direct emissions, improving production energy efficiency to reduce indirect emissions, and continuously investing in the monitoring and development of innovative carbon reduction technologies. In the mid-term, these carbon reduction measures will be expanded, and new Supplementary Cementing Materials (SCMs) will be developed for use in low-carbon cement to achieve a more significant reduction in emissions per unit of cement. In the later stage, once the carbon reduction measures are mature and wellestablished, the Company will fully implement Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology to achieve the final step towards net zero.

Asia Cement Scope 3 Emissions and Verification of Scope 3

Our company references ISO 14064-1:2018 to establish a procedure for identifying significant indirect greenhouse gas emissions. After evaluating factors such as anticipated use, emission proportion, impact, and data quality, we have identified significant indirect emissions as purchased goods, upstream fuels and energy, and operational waste generated during operations. In 2023, emissions for each category under Scope 3 are as follows, with a verification coverage rate of 100%.

Scope 3 Emission and Reduction

The amount and proportion of carbon reduction of Asia Cement and its subsidiaries

Target: The annual total carbon reduction is 38,900 tons of CO2e, equivalent to the volume of carbon absorbed by 100 Daan Forest Parks.

Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Targets

Aligning with China’s “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” goals, ACC (China) sets 2019 as the baseline year, with GHG reduction targets for 2025/2030/2035 and a commitment to net-zero emissions by 2060.

2025: Reduce cement carbon emission intensity by 5.1%
2030: Reduce cement carbon emission intensity by 8%
2035: Reduce cement carbon emission intensity by 9.3%
